The Brain Team is Ithaca High School’s nationally-ranked Quizbowl team, a diverse group of young men and women that compete in academic quiz competitions locally, regionally, and nationally. Questions can be on all topics: science, literature, history, fine arts, philosophy, mythology, social sciences, current events, and even pop culture (affectionately referred to as “trash”). Teams from Ithaca regularly rank very high at tournaments and have appeared at national competitions every year since the team’s founding in 2002.

In the 2016 National History Bowl finals, the team finished 18th overall (up from 32nd in 2015), with team captain Casey Wetherbee reaching the quarterfinals in the individual Bee tournament. At the PACE National Scholastic Championship, the team finished tied for 27th out of 96 teams (a significant jump from last year’s 54th place finish) where they also set a new record for 3rd Most Bounceback Points in a Match (110 out of 160 possible).  The team has also competed at the NAQT High School National Academic Tournament, finishing 100th in 2013, tied for 53rd in 2014, and 116th in 2015 with one of our members finishing in the top 100 in the individual standings (out of nearly 1400 players).
