The Brain Team is Ithaca High School’s nationally-ranked Quizbowl team, a diverse group of young people that compete in academic quiz competitions locally, regionally, and nationally. Questions can be on all topics: science, literature, history, fine arts, philosophy, mythology, social sciences, current events, and even pop culture (affectionately referred to as “trash”). No strangers to championship brackets at regular season tournament, teams from Ithaca have appeared at national competitions every year since the team’s founding in 2002.

Team News

At the 2022 NAQT High School National Academic Championship Tournament, Ithaca’s team of two juniors and two seniors finished with an 8-5 record and officially tied for 39th out of 272 teams and far exceeding their 113th finish in 2021. The team has finished as high as 5th place in 2017 and 2019.

In February, 2019, Ithaca High School was selected as NAQT’s Team of the Week for breaking the all-time record for highest sustained Points Per Game over an entire tournament of 632.22 over nine rounds, set at the 2019 Geneva Invitational, a record they held until April, 2022. Three matches at this tournament are in the top 100 of all-time highest points earned in a single game.
