The Brain Team is Ithaca High School’s nationally-ranked Quizbowl team, a diverse group of young men and women that compete in academic quiz competitions locally, regionally, and nationally. Questions can be on all topics: science, literature, history, fine arts, philosophy, mythology, social sciences, current events, and even pop culture (affectionately referred to as “trash”). No strangers to championship brackets at regular season tournament, teams from Ithaca have appeared at national competitions every year since the team’s founding in 2002.

At the 2019 NAQT High School National Academic Championship Tournament, Ithaca’s team of three seniors and one junior set a new team record the team record by going 8-2 in the preliminary matches, being one of only a handful of teams to qualify for the playoffs in only their first seven Saturday rounds. On Sunday, they made it all the way to the quarterfinals before finally finishing their run with a 13-4 record and a 5th place trophy, matching their run in 2017,. At previous appearances at HSNCT, the program finished tied for 51st in 2018, 116th in 2015, tied for 53rd in 2014, and 100th in 2013. At the 2019 PACE National Scholastic Championship, the Ithaca A team, missing its key Science player, finished 28th with a 9-10 record in the field of 96. The Ithaca B team, all of whom new to PACE NSC, finished 69th with a 6-9 record.
In February, 2019, Ithaca High School was selected as NAQT’s Team of the Week for breaking the all-time record for highest sustained Points Per Game over an entire tournament of 632.22 over nine rounds, set at the 2019 Geneva Invitational. Three matches at this tournament are in the top 50 of all-time highest points earned in a single game.
